Columbus does not require a building permit for a fence 6 feet or less in height, but the Zoning Code still regulates placement under that height through vision-clearance rules: no fence over 30 inches is allowed within the vision-clearance area at a corner or where an abutting lot has a driveway to the street. A fence over 6 feet is regulated as a structure, triggers rear- and side-yard setback requirements, and needs a building permit with plans sealed by an architect or engineer.
