Independence does not require a permit for a fence under 6 feet in height; a permit is required if the fence exceeds 6 feet. A fence cannot exceed 8 feet in height, except fences around tennis courts, swimming pools, and similar recreational facilities. Fences in front of a residence, and along a street side in front of the residence, may not exceed 36 inches in height and must be at least 50 percent transparent (such as chain link, picket, wrought iron, or split rail). A fence may be built up to the property line, but the owner is responsible for accurately locating the line, and a fence cannot sit within 25 feet of an extended point of intersection of street rights-of-way. All fencing in Office, Commercial, and Industrial districts requires a permit regardless of height.
