Antioch enforces the 2022 California Building Codes, which carry the standard small-deck exemption of 200 square feet, 30 inches above grade and not attached to a dwelling. The citys own Building Division exempt-work list is otherwise notably permissive for a California city: accessory structures under 120 square feet, retaining walls up to 3 feet, and most residential concrete flatwork all need no permit, and landscape sprinkler systems are separately exempt. A deck attached to the house or exceeding 200 square feet needs a full permit and site plan showing distance from all property lines, typically 5 feet from side and rear lines in standard R-1 zones.

Per County Ordinance 72-6.202, a deck is exempt only if it is 200 sq ft or less, no more than 30 inches above grade, not attached to a dwelling and does not serve the required exit door.
