Local Rule

City of Green Bay Community and Economic Development Department, Building Inspection Division; Green Bay Municipal Code Chapter 44

Green Bay requires a permit for yard sheds larger than 50 square feet, per the city's own site plan and permit-matrix guidance; a shed at or under 50 square feet does not need a building permit. Sheds are limited in the front setback and cannot be placed in front of the principal structure; no more than 30 percent of the required rear yard may be covered by accessory structures. Round-top shelters, fabric or plastic-film enclosed portable structures, and metal carports are prohibited in residential districts under Section 44-590 of the Zoning Code. Sheds must be anchored down, with the anchoring system specified on the permit application.

How This Compares to Brown County

Green Bay's own rule is shown above (No permit under 50 sqft). Here is the separate rule that applies at the county level, for context:

Individual municipalities (Wisconsin shed permitting is loca

Green Bay, the county seat, sets one of the lowest shed permit thresholds found in this dataset: a building permit is required for anything over 50 square feet, far below the 120 to 200 square foot range most Wisconsin cities use. Layered on top of that low size threshold is a separate material-based rule specific to Green Bay: a metal-sided shed is capped at 120 square feet in residential zones regardless of the underlying lot, and anything larger with a metal exterior finish can only be approved through a conditional use permit rather than an ordinary building permit. Green Bay also limits how much of the required rear yard sheds may collectively occupy, capping coverage at 30 percent of that rear yard regardless of how many individual structures are involved.
