A building permit is required for any accessory building (garage, storage shed, etc.) larger than 20 square feet in Garland, per the city's own Accessory/Storage Building page and confirmed directly in the Garland Development Code, one of the lowest thresholds among major Texas cities. Storage buildings cannot be used as living space and must be built of typical building materials; unpainted wood, tin, plastic, plain concrete block, corrugated metal, canvas, or vinyl are not allowed. The total floor area of all accessory buildings on a lot may not exceed 30 percent of the main building's floor area, except this cannot limit accessory building area to less than 600 square feet. An accessory building exceeding 200 square feet is capped at 15 feet in height with a maximum wall height of 10.5 feet.
