Plano does not require a building permit for an accessory building that is 120 square feet or less, per the city's own FAQ; for accessory buildings of more than 120 square feet, a building permit is required. A permit-exempt building still needs to meet the setback requirements of the City of Plano Zoning Ordinance. Prefabricated metal sheds and carports are considered accessory buildings and must be secured to the ground to resist movement from storms or vandalism. No permanent structure, including sheds, may be built on top of a recorded easement.
