City of Huntington Beach Building Division; Huntington Beach Municipal Code Chapter 17.04 (Building Code) and Chapter 17.07 (Residential Code), local amendment to Section 105.2/R105.2

Huntington Beach exempts a one-story detached accessory structure used as a tool or storage shed, playhouse, pagoda, gazebo, or similar use from a building permit when the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet, per the city's own Work Exempt from Permit Requirements handout; the Zoning Subdivision Ordinance separately defines this as an accessory structure not exceeding 120 square feet AND 10 feet in height. Masonry or concrete fences not over 42 inches, and other fences not over 6 feet, are exempt if outside required zoning setbacks. Retaining walls not over 4 feet from the bottom of the footing are also exempt unless supporting a surcharge or impounding certain liquids.

California's building code lowers the shed exemption to 120 square feet (a 10x12 shed), below the national 200, with a 12-foot height cap.
