West Valley City does not require a building permit for a detached accessory structure that is 200 square feet or less in floor area and only one story in height, per the city's own Repairs Not Requiring Permits page; the location of the structure still requires approval from the Planning & Zoning Division. Building any detached structure exceeding 200 square feet, including garages, barns, tool and storage sheds, playhouses, and pool or hot tub enclosures, requires a permit. Exempt sheds cannot exceed 16 feet in height and must maintain a 6-foot separation from the house.
