Any detached accessory structure with a projected roof area less than 200 square feet does not require a building permit in Kansas City, per the city's own Code Questions and Building Permit Exempt Work pages, though it must still meet all applicable Zoning and Development Code requirements such as setbacks and building height. For a detached accessory structure 200 square feet or greater, a building permit must be obtained, AND a Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) variance is separately required for sheds, storage buildings, and pool houses of that size. This makes Kansas City one of the more permissive major Missouri cities for small sheds, but one of the more demanding for larger ones.
