Ann Arbor does not require a building permit for a shed 200 square feet or less, but does require a Zoning Compliance Permit for that shed instead, per the city's own guidance; the same applies to detached carports, decks, garages, gazebos, greenhouses, pergolas, and pool houses of 200 square feet or less, and to fences 7 feet or less. City Code requires zoning review of building permit applications to ensure construction is consistent with the Zoning Ordinance, and this review is handled by Planning staff as part of the permit process. A shed 200 square feet or larger requires a full building permit.
