Rancho Cucamonga exempts a one-story detached accessory structure used as a tool or storage shed, playhouse, or similar use from a building permit when the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet AND the maximum height does not exceed 8 feet, a stricter local height cap than the 12-foot standard used in most California cities, provided the structure is not located in required setbacks. All accessory structures, exempt or not, may not occupy more than 30 percent of the rear yard setback area and must be constructed after (not before) the primary building on the site. Structures under 120 square feet and under 6 feet in height are exempt from planning entitlements entirely under Chapter 17.42.
