Elk Grove exempts a one-story detached accessory structure used as a tool or storage shed, playhouse, or similar use from a building permit when the floor area is 120 square feet or smaller, with no more than 12 inches of roof overhang extending beyond the exterior wall; any accessory structure of any size that is attached or joined to the main house or garage always requires a permit. A structural analysis by a California-licensed professional engineer is required for all attached and detached accessory structures regardless of exemption status. The city adopted the 2025 California Building Standards Code without amendment on November 12, 2025.
