A permit is not required for a one-story detached accessory structure used as a tool or storage shed, playhouse, or similar use in Bakersfield, provided the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet, per both the city's own permit guide and Municipal Code Section 17.08.130. Under the zoning code specifically, an accessory building in a residential zone that exceeds 7 feet in height and/or 120 square feet in area cannot be located nearer than 5 feet to any interior side or rear property line, and no accessory structure may be placed in a required street-side or front yard.
