Ann Arbor runs its own building department, separate from Washtenaw County, which handles unincorporated areas including the confusingly similarly named but legally distinct Ann Arbor Charter Township surrounding the city. A prefabricated above-ground pool under 24 inches deep and 5,000 gallons is generally exempt from a permit; larger or in-ground pools need one. As with other permit types, a pool permit becomes invalid if work does not commence within 180 days, or is suspended or abandoned for 180 days, and is closed if no inspection occurs within that window.
