What Applies at the County Level

Tippecanoe County Building Commission (unincorporated areas)

The county's own FAQ states plainly that all in-ground pools require an Improvement Location Permit regardless of size, while an above-ground pool only requires that same permit once it reaches 42 inches or taller, a higher threshold than the 24 inch figure many other counties use. A fence built around a swimming pool must stand at least 5 feet high, and a fence within a street frontage setback is separately capped at 42 inches for visibility reasons, a coincidental overlap with the pool-permit trigger height. The county's Health Department inspects public and semi-public pools and spas, but explicitly does not permit or inspect residential swimming pools and spas, which fall instead under the Building Commission's zoning process described above.
