Fence Installation Permits in Salt Lake City
Local Rule
Salt Lake City Building Services & Code Enforcement; Salt
Salt Lake City requires a building permit prior to construction of any fence or wall, regardless of height, with a consolidated fee of $32.15; the permit ensures zoning compliance (location, height, materials) as well as structural safety through plan review and site inspection. A Certificate of Appropriateness is always additionally required for properties in a Local Historic District. Front-yard fences, walls, or hedges are capped at 4 feet, dropping to 3 feet within 30 feet of a corner-lot intersection, with a further 30-inch limit close to the property line. Construction in the FP Foothills Protection District, the Historic Preservation Overlay District, or the FR-1/FR-2/FR-3 Foothill Residential districts must also comply with additional fencing regulations specific to those zones.

MSD's own exemption list states textually: "Erecting a fence that is no more than seven feet in height, measured from adjoining grade" is exempt, and explicitly "includes wood, concrete, masonry, and plastic fences" an even-handed exemption across materials, unlike many jurisdictions that require a permit for masonry/concrete fences at any height.
