Charlotte requires a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Building Standards building permit for any fence or wall over 6 feet; fences at or under 6 feet do not need a building permit. Separately, any fence or wall built along or bordering a city-maintained street or sidewalk needs a no-cost Fence and Wall Certificate from the Charlotte Department of Transportation, per City Code Section 19-243, confirming the fence meets the zoning height limits and the sight-distance triangle at intersections; a fence entirely within a side or rear yard away from a public street does not need this certificate. Front-yard fences over 50 percent opaque are limited to 4 feet under the zoning ordinance.
