City of Sandy Springs Community Development Department,

Sandy Springs requires a Fence Permit to install a new fence or gate, or to replace an existing one, regardless of height; there is no under-threshold exemption. Exceptions are temporary security fencing during construction and pool enclosures already covered by an approved Pool Permit. Inspections are required for fences taller than 7 feet, for masonry piers, and for vehicular or electronic gates (which also need Fire Marshal's Office review). The standard fence permit fee is $80 (a $25 administrative fee, $50 certificate-of-completion fee, and $5 technology fee); a fence permit that includes a vehicular gate adds a $100 plan review fee and $5 technology fee, for a total of $185. Applications go through the city's Online Permitting Portal or in person at City Hall by QLess appointment.

Fulton County fence rules come with an unusual wrinkle: the county does NOT run one permitting system. Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Johns Creek, Alpharetta, Roswell, Milton and South Fulton each operate their own building department with their own rules, only unincorporated areas answer to Fulton County directly. For unincorporated Fulton, the county zoning resolution (Sec. 4.11) sets the standards: fences and walls may not exceed 8 feet from grade in residential districts (higher than the typical Georgia 6-foot limit), with column/ornament heights allowed up to 3 feet above that; fences must be set back at least 3 feet from a public right-of-way; and no part of a gate may sit within 20 feet of a public right-of-way.
