City of Fort Lauderdale Development Services Department,

Fort Lauderdale requires a building permit to erect, alter, or replace a fence or wall, obtained through the Development Services Department's LauderBuild portal, and the fence must also comply with ULDR Section 47-19.5 (height, setback, transparency, finish, and sight triangle standards). Under Table 1 of that section, residential-district fences and walls (including chain-link) may reach 6.5 feet, and fences, walls, or hedges spanning residential and non-residential districts may reach up to 10 feet, all measured from grade; for properties abutting a right-of-way, an opaque fence, hedge, or wall within a sight triangle is capped at 2.5 feet. Barbed wire is permitted only in I, U, B-2, and B-3 zoning districts, up to 10 feet, not visible from any street. A pedestrian gate entrance feature may reach 11 feet high and 8 feet wide.
