Anchorage exempts fences not over 8 feet high from a building permit, per the Municipality's own Handout AG.03 and Administrative Code Chapter 23.10; fences over 8 feet require a building permit. Even a permit-exempt fence must still meet zoning setback requirements. A fence may be constructed at the lot line, but front-yard fences in residential zoning districts cannot exceed 4 feet, except in R-6, R-8, and R-9 districts, where front-yard fences may reach 6 feet (or up to 8 feet if the fencing material is non-sight-obscuring, such as chain-link or split rail). Fences along a front or secondary front setback must be installed with the finished side facing outward. Enclosures around a permitted tennis court, ball field, or other recreational facility are exempt from the height restrictions.
