The citys own Building Code exempts a deck purely by height and cover rather than area: an exterior deck, walkway or balcony accessory to a one- or two-family dwelling needs no permit when no portion of the walking surface is more than 30 inches above grade and the structure does not support a roof, with no square footage limit attached to that exemption. Adding any roof cover removes the exemption regardless of height or size. Excavations for footings must be backfilled within 28 days of digging unless the Building Official approves otherwise.
