A freestanding deck that stays at or below both the 30 inch and 200 square foot limits may be exempt from the building permit requirement. Birmingham enforces the 2015 IRC rather than the 2018 edition used by most neighboring Alabama cities, so deck designs must meet the structural provisions of that earlier edition, including its version of Section R507. Permit fees are calculated at $9.50 per $1,000 of declared construction cost.
